What Inflammation Actually Is, and Why It Keeps Showing Up

Redness, breakouts, sensitivity, accelerated ageing. These are often treated as separate skin problems requiring different solutions. But in most cases they are different expressions of the same underlying process: inflammation.

Inflammation is not inherently harmful. It is the skin's immune response, the mechanism by which it protects itself from injury and infection. When you cut yourself, inflammation is what initiates the healing process. The problem is chronic, low-grade inflammation, the kind that persists without a clear wound or infection to resolve. This is what drives most of the skin conditions I work with.

When the skin barrier is compromised, the skin's immune system is in a constant state of low-level alert. Irritants and pathogens that a healthy barrier would block are getting through. The immune response fires repeatedly and over time this becomes the skin's default state. This is why reactive skin often feels like it is always on the edge of flaring, even when nothing obvious has changed.

Where inflammation shows up

  • Acne. The role of bacteria in acne is real, but it is inflammation that drives the severity of breakouts. Reducing inflammation calms the cycle more effectively than targeting the bacteria alone.
  • Rosacea. Fundamentally an inflammatory condition, often worsened by products and treatments that further disrupt the barrier.
  • Sensitivity and reactivity. Skin that stings, flushes, or reacts to products that should be neutral is in a state of chronic inflammation.
  • Accelerated ageing. Chronic inflammation breaks down collagen and elastin, which is why stressed, reactive skin often shows fine lines and uneven texture earlier than its age would suggest.

The corneotherapy approach addresses inflammation at its source rather than treating the visible symptoms. Repairing the barrier reduces the constant low-level immune activation. Removing ingredients that are aggravating the skin eliminates unnecessary triggers. Calming the inflammatory cycle gives the skin the conditions it needs to repair itself. This is why the same approach that improves sensitivity also tends to improve breakouts, tone, and texture, because they share the same driver.
