Corneotherapy is a clinical methodology focused on one thing: restoring and maintaining the integrity of the skin barrier. The name comes from the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of skin, combined with the Greek word therapeia, meaning healing. The principle is simple: when the barrier is functioning well, the skin can regulate itself, but when it is not, no amount of products or treatments will produce lasting results.
The methodology was developed from research begun in the 1960s by dermatologist Dr Albert Kligman, who was one of the first to demonstrate that the stratum corneum is not simply dead tissue waiting to be removed. It is a biologically active layer that sends signals to deeper layers of skin, influences inflammation, and plays a central role in how the skin renews and protects itself. Corneotherapy is built on that understanding.
Most cosmetic skin care targets symptoms: a breakout, a patch of dryness, uneven tone, visible ageing. The treatment addresses what can be seen on the surface, often through exfoliation, stimulation, or occlusion. This can produce fast visible change, but it does not address why the skin is behaving the way it is, which is why the results tend not to last.
Corneotherapy asks a different question. Not what does this skin look like, but how is it functioning? Why is the barrier behaving this way? What is driving the inflammation, the sensitivity, the congestion? The treatment follows the diagnosis, which is why the initial skin assessment is so comprehensive, and why results continue to build over time rather than peaking and fading.
What corneotherapy prioritises
- Repairing the barrier using ingredients the skin recognises and can actually use
- Calming inflammation rather than stimulating a response
- Supporting the microbiome rather than disrupting it
- Removing what is causing damage before adding anything new
- Gradual, stable progress that holds over time
Prologic Skincare is formulated with ingredients that mimic the skin's own chemistry rather than override it. Most of what the skincare industry produces sits on top of the skin, whereas Prologic Skincare products work within it.
